Introduction into Prophecy -

Introduction into Prophecy

In Genesis 1:26 we read that God spoke to Jesus and the Holy Spirit and said:  “Let us make man in our image and in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over all the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” Our God is a personal God, as we see so clearly stated in the first chapter of the Word of God.  He personally made you and me in His exact image and likeness,  a replication of Himself in human form. And it is wonderful to know that our Lord has thoughts and plans for our good and not for our evil.

Jeremiah 29:11-13  “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.  Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”

These thoughts and plans that He has for us are so that we will take our rightful place as children of God in a close and intimate relationship, where He can work with us and talk to us on an ongoing basis, daily giving to man all the desires of his heart and full dominion over all the earth.

Genesis 1:28 “God blessed them and said to them, be fruitful and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it.  Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Ever since sin dulled the ears of mankind to hearing the voice of God and breaking this intimate relationship that mankind had with God, God was not able to communicate with everyone individually.   As a consequence, His face was hidden from us and He (God) would not hear us.

Isaiah 59:2  “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that you will not hear.”

It is interesting to note that when Adam and Eve sinned they hid themselves from God (Genesis 3:10).  After the judgment on that sin and from then onwards, God has hidden His face from all further sin that has been and will be committed (Isaiah 59:2). For that reason, God had to find individuals (men or women) with whom He could communicate personally, and who could speak to the rest of the world on His behalf.  This lasted from the time of Enoch, who was the first of the recorded Prophets, to the time of John the Baptist, who was the last of the Old Testament prophets.  Their function was similar in that they pointed the way back to God, and prepared the way for the coming of the Messiah. The prophet was God’s verbal contact with His chosen people, and sometimes even with the heathen nations.  The prophets in both the Old and New Testaments participated in all God’s plans and performances.

Amos 3:7  “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plans to the prophets.”

They would subsequently bring words of blessings, words of direction, words of correction and words of judgment, as well as demonstrate the power, grace and love of God in various ways at different times. Jesus Christ who is our Prophet, Priest and King introduced a new and a living way by which each individual may come boldly into His presence and obtain GRACE and MERCY (Hebrews 10:19-20).PRAISE GOD! The veil that hid His face from man was torn in two and access into His presence was again accessible (Matthew 27:51).  During the days of the Old Testament, communication was possible either through a priest or a prophet.  Now, Jesus Christ has made a way for God to come and dwell personally within each individual (Hebrews 6:18-20).  When a person becomes born again by the blood of Jesus Christ and filled with the Holy Spirit, that person’s body becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit; a dwelling place for God. Now, with the sin removed by the blood of Jesus Christ and the judgment of that sin no longer on the child of God, freedom and ability to communicate with God and with man have no limitations.  The prophet Joel declared this when he said: “I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy.”  Paul makes it very clear when he says, “for you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.” The ability to know and speak the heart of God or the mind of Christ is available for every Christian and it is definitely seen as a gift, which we should desire and strive to receive. Again Paul the Apostle writes in the book of Corinthians that we need to be zealous for the prophetic gift, and he places great  emphasis on this by having it follow directly after walking in the way of love (Christ’s way).

1 Cor. 14:1,39   “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.”

Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and to follow the way of love will lead you into relationship with the Father.  Now, the desire of your heart should be that the prophetic word be resident in you at all times.  As Jesus is the Word of God, we have His Word in our hearts, and therefore should not have any difficulty at all in receiving words from Him.

The simplest way to hear the Voice of God today is during times of meditation – sitting quietly at the feet of Jesus, waiting patiently to hear the Voice of God.

Then writing down whatever you’ve received.

The Word of God says in the book of Psalm 95:7:  “Today if you hear His Voice.”

And again in the book of Psalms 46:10:  “Be still and know that I am God.”

The Word of God can come in many various ways, and through different circumstances to non-believers as well as believers.  Every child of God can hear the Voice of God, and can also be His Voice in various circumstances.  It is by spending time in meditation with God that His Word becomes more clear.

TRY THIS: Read the verse below and cross-reference it with Youngs Concordance or the Strongs Concordance and you will be surprised to see how often meditation is spoken of.

Psalm 39:3  “My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue.”
